Harvard’s endowment jumps 27% in fiscal 2026, lifted by SpaceX as top holding

The impressive financial rebound, detailed in the institution’s annual financial report released on Thursday, easily outperformed the broader market. The endowment’s returns beat the S&P 500’s 22.3% total return over the same period by 4.8 percentage points. For Harvard, which operates on a fiscal year ending June 30, the results represent the most successful investment cycle managed by the Harvard Management Company since 2021.

However, the stellar portfolio performance comes against a turbulent backdrop. The university is navigating a complex and hostile relationship with the federal government, highlighted by actions from the Trump administration to penalize the school, withhold funding, and pursue legal action alleging failures to protect Jewish students and defiance of admissions probes.

In the 49-page annual financial report, Harvard’s chief financial officer, Ritu Kalra, and treasurer, Timothy Barakett, addressed the contrast between the university’s booming investment portfolio and its mounting fiscal pressures.

"While markets can easily take back what they give, that return will strengthen the endowment’s capacity to support the University over time," Kalra and Barakett wrote in the report. They emphasized that the university utilizes a deliberate strategy to shield its day-to-day operations from the wild fluctuations of global financial markets. "The University deliberately smooths distributions so that operating support does not rise and fall with the markets. Strong investment returns therefore support Harvard’s work gradually, through future distributions."

A significant driver of the endowment’s recent outperformance became public through regulatory filings. In its second-quarter 13F filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Harvard revealed a massive $2.2 billion stake in SpaceX, Elon Musk’s private rocket and satellite manufacturing company. This colossal position instantly became the endowment’s largest single holding by value. By comparison, the university’s next largest disclosed public equity position was a stake in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company valued at just under $350 million.

Despite the remarkable growth of the portfolio, Harvard’s broader financial ecosystem is facing severe strain from Washington. The university’s financial picture has been directly undermined by policy and funding decisions enacted by the federal government. Most notably, federally-sponsored research revenue took a sharp hit, declining 19.5% to $509 million in fiscal year 2026.

Furthermore, the university faces an unprecedented regulatory and tax squeeze starting in the current fiscal year. Kalra and Barakett pointed out that endowment resources will face an additional, highly punitive constraint as the federal excise tax on Harvard’s net investment income increases nearly six-fold, jumping from 1.4% to 8%.

"We estimate the higher rate will cost roughly $300 million a year," Kalra and Barakett wrote, adding that in a fiscal year yielding record-breaking investment returns like the one just completed, the federal excise tax bite "would be several times larger."

The mounting financial pressures and administrative head-winds represent a formidable challenge for the Ivy League institution as it balances its multi-billion-dollar academic mission with political friction. Yet, university leadership remains publicly resolute.

Harvard President Alan Garber acknowledged the external headwinds and uncertainties facing the institution, but expressed steadfast confidence in the university’s enduring strength and long-term trajectory.

"Together, we have the opportunity to set the University on a path to excellence that none of us can imagine today," Garber said in the report. "Notwithstanding the challenges and uncertainty, this is a thrilling time to be part of a great American institution devoted to Veritas."
