Reddit Shares Suffer Record Plunge After Weak Q4 Sales Forecast and AI Search Shift

Shares of Reddit suffered a catastrophic decline on Friday, cratering 29.22% in what marked the steepest single-day drop for the social media platform since it debuted as a publicly traded company in 2024. The historic market sell-off was triggered by a disappointing fourth-quarter sales forecast issued in the company’s latest earnings report, catching Wall Street off guard and reversing much of the enthusiasm that had previously propelled the stock.

The previous record low for the social media company was set on July 31, when the stock dropped by 20.99%. However, Friday’s staggering double-digit collapse far eclipsed that summer downturn, signaling a sudden shift in investor sentiment regarding the platform’s near-term commercial trajectory, its advertising growth engine, and how it navigates the rapidly evolving digital ecosystem dominated by artificial intelligence.

The root of the market’s anxiety stems from guidance provided by the company late in the week. On Thursday, Reddit projected its fourth-quarter sales would land between $1 billion and $1.03 billion. That forecast fell short of consensus estimates compiled by Wall Street analysts, who had been anticipating revenue of around $1.05 billion for the holiday-heavy quarter.

The softer-than-expected guidance overshadowed what was otherwise a robust third-quarter financial performance. In the same earnings release, Reddit reported third-quarter sales growth of 53% compared to the same period a year ago. While this represented a deceleration from the breakneck growth rates seen in previous quarters, the company still managed to beat Wall Street expectations on both top-line revenue and bottom-line earnings. Nonetheless, in the high-stakes world of growth technology equities, forward-looking guidance invariably trumps past performance, and the underwhelming Q4 outlook immediately triggered a sharp reassessment of the stock’s valuation.

Compounding the pressure on the company’s financial outlook is a fundamental shift in how internet users discover and navigate online content. The latest financial report coincides with a noticeable disruption in Reddit’s search referral traffic, a change driven largely by the proliferation of Google’s AI Overview features in search engine results pages.

During an interview with CNBC, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman addressed this structural shift head-on, acknowledging that search-referral traffic originating from Google went "down meaningfully in this quarter" as a direct consequence of artificial intelligence integration. For years, Reddit has enjoyed a massive, organic influx of visitors who landed on its community-driven discussion threads directly through search engine queries. As Google increasingly answers user questions directly via AI-generated summaries at the top of search results, traditional referral traffic patterns are experiencing a profound transformation.

Reddit stock plunges 29% after weak outlook, wrapping its worst day ever

In response to these shifting digital dynamics and the pressure on search referral traffic, Reddit announced on Thursday that it plans to test a major operational change: requiring users to log in to access platform content. This strategic pivot represents a dramatic departure for a website whose vast repository of community-based discussion content has long been synonymous with the open internet, characterized by unfettered, frictionless access for anyone browsing the web.

According to Huffman, the decision to implement login walls is deliberately intended to boost the number of logged-in users, who historically prove to be significantly more active on the platform than anonymous casual visitors. Cultivating a larger base of authenticated, active users in turn strengthens the company’s core digital advertising business by providing better data, higher engagement metrics, and more reliable targeting capabilities for brands.

Reflecting on the historic nature of the platform’s open-access model and the difficult choice to alter it, Huffman noted that the site had maintained its unique approach longer than almost any of its peers.

"Reddit is the last platform to provide basically unfettered logged-out access, and that’s largely because of me. I’ve been holding that line," Huffman said during his remarks. "I think users will probably go through the same understanding that I have, which is that it’s a sign of the times. It’s an evolution of how these platforms work."

The combination of a softer fourth-quarter sales forecast, declining search referral traffic due to artificial intelligence, and the strategic gamble of forcing users to log in prompted swift reactions from the financial analyst community. Multiple major investment firms and financial institutions downgraded Reddit stock following the earnings release and subsequent disclosures.

Analysts at Citizens highlighted the complex web of challenges facing the platform, pointing out in a note to clients that recent "search changes highlight the problem with selling content to Google." The firm added that as referral headwinds continue to worsen, the operational uncertainty surrounding user growth during the transition to mandatory login requirements "puts more pressure on user monetization."

As Reddit navigates this critical juncture, the company faces the delicate task of preserving the vibrant, organic community culture that built its foundation while simultaneously adapting its business model to survive and thrive in an AI-driven digital landscape.
