Ripple and BNY Expand Strategic Partnership to Explore Blockchain-Based Trade Finance and Institutional Asset Custody
Ripple and BNY are significantly expanding their ongoing strategic partnership, moving well beyond traditional digital asset custody to explore the integration of blockchain technology into global trade finance. This latest development marks a major step forward in bridging the worlds of traditional institutional banking and decentralized financial infrastructure, as both institutions seek to make tokenized assets more practical and usable for day-to-day capital markets operations.
Under the expanded collaboration, BNY has integrated support for both XRP and Ripple’s proprietary stablecoin, RLUSD, onto its robust Digital Asset Custody platform. This integration enables eligible institutional clients of the bank to securely hold and transfer both assets within a regulated framework. The move logically builds upon BNY’s existing, foundational role as the primary reserve custodian for RLUSD, as well as its established custody relationship with Ripple Prime, further cementing the trusted institutional ties between the two entities.

Beyond simple asset custody, the companies have outlined ambitious plans to broaden their technological scope to support tokenized assets and sophisticated investment products issued directly on the XRP Ledger, commonly known as the XRPL. Furthermore, subject to final internal approvals by BNY and the necessary regulatory clearances, the firms aim to enable BNY clients to seamlessly mint and redeem RLUSD directly through the bank. This capability would drastically streamline the operational workflows for institutional participants looking to leverage stablecoin liquidity within conventional financial pipelines.
The strategic vision behind this deepening alliance is rooted in the evolving needs of modern financial markets, where the initial novelty of issuing assets on-chain has given way to a pressing demand for real-world utility. Monica Long, President of Ripple, emphasized this crucial shift in market dynamics.
"We’re moving past the initial issuance of assets on-chain — now, it’s all about making these tokenized assets usable for payments and collateral across financial markets," said Monica Long, President of Ripple. "With BNY, we’re connecting the necessary components of financial infrastructure on the XRP Ledger so institutions can move from holding digital assets to using them within capital markets and trade finance seamlessly."

The sentiment is fully shared by leadership on the banking side, with BNY viewing the partnership as a critical pathway toward modernizing global financial infrastructure. Carolyn Weinberg, Chief Innovation and Market Transformation Officer at BNY, highlighted the importance of establishing reliable bridges between legacy systems and distributed ledger technology.
"Future market infrastructure will deliver connectivity across payments, liquidity, collateral and securities, driven by architected bridges between traditional scaled systems and always-on blockchain technology," said Carolyn Weinberg, Chief Innovation and Market Transformation Officer at BNY. "In collaboration with Ripple, we are working to shape a more continuous, efficient and resilient financial system, paving the way for broader institutional adoption."
As part of this broader push into real-world asset utility and trade finance, Ripple and BNY are actively collaborating with working capital platform C2FO. Together, the organizations are exploring an innovative supply chain finance initiative centered on tokenized trade receivables operating on the XRPL. The primary objective of this initiative is to expand investor access and introduce greater efficiency into supply chain funding mechanisms, which have traditionally relied on slower, fragmented settlement processes.

This expansion comes at a time of notable growth and milestone achievements for Ripple’s underlying technologies and products. Ripple reported that its RLUSD stablecoin has successfully achieved a milestone market capitalization of approximately US$2.5 billion, reflecting robust demand and growing confidence from market participants. Simultaneously, the XRP Ledger continues to demonstrate high throughput and network resilience, having processed more than 4.6 billion transactions since its initial launch, reinforcing its capability to handle enterprise-grade financial workloads.
