International Romance Scam Network Conning Millions from Elderly Victims Collapses as Three Plead Guilty

What began as a desperate search for companionship and romantic connection instead culminated in a devastating financial and emotional catastrophe for dozens of vulnerable individuals, primarily elderly Americans. Victims of a sophisticated, cross-border fraud ring watched in despair as their life savings were systematically drained through a cruel web of digital deception, leaving them not only financially destitute but profoundly shattered in their faith in humanity.

Now, accountability has finally arrived for three key players in the transnational enterprise. Twin brothers from Ghana and an American woman have formally admitted to their criminal roles in an extensive international network. This network utilized fabricated romantic personas—and in some instances, advanced artificial intelligence—to swindle more than 130 victims out of a staggering $9 million in cash, luxury goods, and other valuables.

According to a formal news release issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, Jamal Abubakari and Kamal Abubakari, both 22-year-old residents of Ghana, alongside 53-year-old Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie of Kula, Hawaii, all pleaded guilty this month to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The guilty pleas mark a significant breakthrough in a federal investigation that spanned multiple continents and exposed the chilling lengths to which modern cyber syndicates will go to exploit trusting individuals.

Federal prosecutors outlined that the elaborate fraud scheme operated actively from July 2024 through April 2026. During this nearly two-year window, the criminal enterprise cast a wide net, ensnaring victims spread across 25 U.S. states, as well as international jurisdictions including Germany and Austria. Court documents detail how the defendants and their co-conspirators systematically trolled dating websites and social media platforms, meticulously building intimate, personal, and frequently romantic relationships with unsuspecting targets.

To maintain the illusion of genuine romance and keep their victims compliant, the perpetrators went to extraordinary technological lengths. In certain instances, court records show, the fraudsters utilized artificial-intelligence-driven video technology to remotely interact with victims in real time, projecting entirely fake personas designed to bypass suspicion and deepen emotional attachment.

Once the emotional hooks were firmly set, the fraudsters deployed a series of fabricated crises designed to manipulate their victims into parting with their money. Swayed by poignant, entirely false stories spun by individuals they had never actually met in person, the victims were persuaded to wire substantial sums of money into various financial accounts controlled by a network of third-party co-conspirators. The justifications provided by the defendants for needing the funds varied, but routinely involved purported medical emergencies, lucrative investment opportunities, or urgent travel costs required so the romantic partners could finally visit the victims in person, according to court filings.

The human cost of these scams, federal prosecutors emphasized, extends far beyond the raw financial losses. In their statements to the court, representatives of the U.S. Attorney’s Office underscored the profound devastation visited upon the elderly population targeted by the ring.

"The consequences of this conduct are all-encompassing," prosecutors stated in court documents. "Victims report that they are left with absolutely nothing to sustain their lives going forward after a lifetime of work and saving. In addition, individual victims are ashamed and deprived of the trust they once had in their fellow human beings."

As an essential component of their negotiated plea agreements, the three defendants have agreed to forfeit a substantial cache of luxury items seized by federal investigators during the course of their arrests. This forfeited property includes high-end jewelry such as luxury timepieces, rings, earrings, medallions, and heavy gold chains, all purchased with the illicit proceeds of the romance scam, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Following their guilty pleas, Jamal Abubakari, Kamal Abubakari, and Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie each face a maximum potential federal prison sentence of 20 years. Formal sentencing hearings for the trio are currently scheduled to take place in February, where federal judges will weigh the severity of the financial destruction against the defendants’ cooperation and admissions of guilt.

Court documents also illuminate the web of aliases utilized by the defendants to evade detection by law enforcement and financial institutions. Jamal Abubakari, who also went by the legal alias Jamal Abubakar, operated under the moniker "Arrangement." His twin brother, Kamal Abubakari, also known as Kamal Abubakar, used the alias "Lancaster." Meanwhile, Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie employed several distinct alternate names over the course of the conspiracy, including Amanda Joy Glum and Amanda Joy Kessei Bierman, federal investigators noted.

While the guilty pleas of the Abubakari twins and Opoku-Boachie represent a major milestone for prosecutors, the sweeping international investigation is far from over. Federal authorities revealed that additional co-conspirators linked to the romance scam ring are currently awaiting extradition from Ghana to face American justice.

The scope of the syndicate’s ill-gotten gains became strikingly evident during law enforcement operations overseas. In Ghana, authorities seized an array of high-end luxury assets purchased with fraud proceeds, including a Lamborghini, a Mercedes-Benz, a BMW, and a futuristic Tesla Cybertruck. Federal investigators estimate that the international network successfully defrauded more than 130 individual victims in total, amassing a fortune that topped $9 million before federal task forces dismantled their infrastructure.

The prosecution of this high-profile case is being conducted under the auspices of the Elder Justice Initiative Program. This vital federal program was established under the statutory authority of the Elder Abuse Prevention and Prosecution Act of 2017, a legislative framework specifically designed to combat elder abuse, neglect, sophisticated financial fraud, and other predatory schemes maliciously targeting the nation’s older demographic. Through coordinated interagency efforts, federal prosecutors and investigative bodies continue to target transnational networks that prey upon the emotional vulnerabilities and life savings of elderly citizens.
