Revolut Registers Austrian Banking Branch Ahead of 2027 Launch, Setting Sights on Primary Account Status
Global digital banking giant Revolut has officially completed the registration of its Austrian banking branch, marking a major milestone in its ongoing expansion across Europe. The company is now actively building out its local operations and infrastructure, with a formal public launch slated for 2027. This strategic move is expected to significantly deepen the fintech’s footprint in the Austrian financial market, transitioning its relationship with local users from a supplementary travel and payment card to a fully fledged daily banking solution.
Once the branch is fully live and operational, customers in Austria will be issued a local IBAN. This domestic account capability represents a transformative shift for the platform’s local user base. With a local IBAN, customers will seamlessly receive their monthly salaries, manage automated direct debits, and execute standing orders entirely through their Revolut domestic account. Furthermore, the introduction of localized accounts will bring enhanced financial management features, including savings accounts equipped with automatic tax deduction capabilities, aligning the digital bank’s offerings closely with traditional domestic banking standards in Austria.
The decision to establish a physical branch comes on the heels of remarkable organic growth for the fintech in the country. More than 500,000 people in Austria already use Revolut for various financial needs. Notably, the company reached this impressive half-million user milestone without ever introducing a product designed specifically or tailored exclusively for the Austrian market. This widespread adoption driven entirely by its core digital proposition highlights the strong underlying demand for flexible, app-based financial services among Austrian consumers, even in the absence of localized features like domestic clearing numbers.

The upcoming launch in 2027 is designed to remove the remaining friction points that have traditionally kept digital-first challenger banks from capturing primary banking relationships. While multi-currency accounts and low-cost international transfers have historically served as Revolut’s primary acquisition drivers, the lack of a local IBAN meant that many users continued to rely on traditional brick-and-mortar institutions for foundational financial tasks such as salary deposits and utility bill management. By integrating domestic account capabilities and automated tax solutions for savings, Revolut is directly addressing these limitations.
Wiktor Stopa, Head of Growth for Western and Eastern Europe at Revolut, emphasized the critical importance of this developmental phase for the company’s regional ambitions. Pointing to the core mechanics of everyday banking, Stopa noted that domestic account infrastructure is the missing link required to capture the loyalty of everyday consumers. The IBAN is the part that really matters for customers who want a consolidated financial life, and the overarching corporate ambition is clear: the company wants to become its customers’ primary banking provider in Austria.
The establishment of the Austrian branch is part of Revolut’s broader, aggressive strategy to scale its regulated banking operations across the European continent. By securing local branch registrations under its European banking license, the fintech aims to bolster consumer trust, enhance regulatory compliance across diverse jurisdictions, and unlock new avenues for lending and wealth management products. As the operational groundwork continues throughout the coming months, the organization will focus on hiring local talent, establishing necessary banking partnerships, and fine-tuning its product suite to meet the specific legal and financial requirements of the Austrian market ahead of the targeted 2027 rollout.
