Nicolas Cage Displaced After Coastal Erosion Triggers Massive Sinkhole at Malibu Mansion

Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage has found himself temporarily displaced from his coastal residence following a dramatic natural disaster in Southern California. Severe coastal erosion has triggered a massive, growing sinkhole directly in the driveway of his Malibu, CA, home, forcing the star out of the property and into local hotels.

"I’m currently a little bit homeless," the 62-year-old star of "National Treasure" and "Face/Off" shared during an October 31 appearance at L.A. Comic Con. "Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just sort of living in hotels so I don’t have normal trick-or-treaters I would like to enjoy tonight."

Despite the upheaval, Cage maintained a festive disposition, noting that he had planned to take his 4-year-old daughter, August, trick-or-treating in nearby Santa Monica later that evening. The property disaster struck just two years after the actor purchased the 4,000-square-foot beachfront home for $10.5 million.

The trouble began on September 6 when an initial 30-square-foot sinkhole appeared on the property. The opening quickly collapsed further, expanding into a staggering 900-square-foot hazard. Jonathan Torres, a public information officer with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, stated that the destructive collapse was likely the result of persistent coastal erosion. Witnesses at the scene reported that ocean waves could actually be seen crashing directly through the cavernous opening. Fortunately, Cage was reportedly not at home when the incident occurred.

The luxury residence is situated along Sea Level Drive, an exclusive gated community in Malibu known for its star-studded roster of residents. Cage shares the upscale neighborhood with several other high-profile entertainment figures, including Pierce Brosnan, Dustin Hoffman, and Mindy Kaling.

Following the collapse, local officials declared a state of emergency. The city of Malibu initially red-tagged seven nearby homes, barring homeowners from accessing their properties due to safety concerns. The situation worsened as officials red-tagged an additional 24 properties within the community. The city explained in an alert that "current road erosion prevents normal ingress and egress to the neighborhood, and would also prevent access or evacuation routes in the event of an emergency."

At the time of the incident, the neighborhood’s homeowners association had already mobilized repair efforts. Officials estimated that the necessary stabilization and construction work could take up to five weeks to complete.

The ocean-facing abode, which includes a secluded beach and a rare roof deck, first entered the market in March 2024 with an asking price of $11.25 million, according to Realtor.com®. At the time, the waterfront residence was also made available concurrently for rent at $25,000 per month.

The luxury home features a private courtyard and a two-car garage equipped with a convenient elevator. Inside, the sun-drenched living room boasts vaulted ceilings, a chic bar area, and a cozy fireplace. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls and sliding doors are designed to seamlessly blend the interior living spaces with the rugged coastal environment.

The home’s second level houses a chef’s kitchen complete with high-end stainless steel appliances, a spacious center island, and sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, the third floor contains four en suite bedrooms, anchored by a primary suite that faces the ocean and includes a spa-worthy bathroom, another fireplace, and a private deck. Along with its direct beach frontage, the property also comes with an adjacent beach lot.

For Cage, the Malibu setback is the latest chapter in a long and eventful real estate history. Years prior to his Malibu purchase, the actor dealt with the high-profile fallout surrounding an infamous "haunted" mansion located in New Orleans’ historic French Quarter. In 2009, Cage lost that property to foreclosure, and it was subsequently acquired by Regions Bank for $4.5 million before being sold to an investor the following year for $2.1 million.

Before Cage secured his Malibu sanctuary in 2024, the property had bounced on and off the market since the summer of 2022, having previously listed for as much as $17.9 million. By comparison, real estate observers noted that Cage appeared to secure a favorable deal on the home—though his professional success around that time meant paying full price would have been well within reach.

In 2024, Cage starred in and produced the horror film "Longlegs," which went on to become the highest-grossing independent film of the year, pulling in $100 million at the box office, according to Variety. Beyond California, the actor has maintained a persistent presence in Nevada—the atmospheric backdrop for his iconic performances in "Leaving Las Vegas" and "Honeymoon in Vegas"—and has owned various properties across the United States over the decades.

His California real estate footprint includes a historic San Francisco Queen Anne Victorian. Cage purchased the property in 2009 and held onto it for 16 years before selling it roughly two decades ago, leaving behind custom stained-glass windows and other personal artistic touches.

While Cage deals with the temporary loss of his West Coast sanctuary, he maintains residential options on the East Coast. In March 2026, the actor reportedly purchased a sprawling two-bedroom condominium in the heart of Manhattan for $6.5 million, utilizing a $4.55 million mortgage to finance the transaction.

According to reports from The Real Deal, Cage acquired the unit within the prestigious Essex House Residences building at 160 Central Park South for a notable $1.4 million discount after the property initially hit the market with an asking price of $7.9 million. Spanning 2,400 square feet, the residence is a combination of two distinct units. Listing descriptions highlighted the home as offering an unparalleled blend of elegance, comfort, and convenience directly at the edge of Central Park.

Cage joins a long legacy of notable residents who have called the Essex House home over the years, including the late music icon David Bowie and his wife, Iman, as well as Oasis star Liam Gallagher, who purchased a unit in the building in 2012 before selling it two years later.
