Blackstone, Aon Set Up Lloyd’s Vehicle in Latest Insurance Push
The newly formed vehicle, named Cortina, is designed to provide essential capital backing for reinsurance contracts, according to an official announcement released on Friday. Under the structure of the initiative, Cortina will take a 3% share of Aon-arranged contracts that are specifically tailored to cover insurers’ property portfolios once catastrophe losses surpass an agreed-upon threshold. Additionally, the syndicate will assume a 5% stake in all other eligible reinsurance deals facilitated by the brokerage firm.
Operations for the new venture will be managed carefully on the ground, with prominent insurance group QBE shouldering the responsibility for the syndicate’s day-to-day underwriting and overarching governance.
The strategic partnership is expected to bring substantial changes to the way risk is distributed and managed globally. Blackstone President and Chief Operating Officer Jon Gray emphasized the broader market implications of the launch, noting that the partnership will broaden the pools of capital available to the reinsurance market, thereby expanding capacity and strengthening resilience across various market cycles.

While life insurance has long been a traditional hunting ground for alternative asset managers seeking steady, long-term yields, firms like Blackstone are now increasingly pushing into property-and-casualty, commonly known as P&C, insurance. Alternative asset managers are naturally drawn to this segment of the market because financial gains and losses within
P&C insurance tend to be largely uncorrelated with the wider movements of traditional financial markets. In this business model, insurers generate profit by collecting more in upfront premiums than they eventually pay out for insurance claims, while simultaneously generating additional returns by investing those collected premiums in various asset classes.
The allure of the sector has been further reinforced by strong financial performances across the industry. P&C insurers and reinsurers generated an average return on equity of 17% in 2025, riding the wave of years marked by steady price increases, according to data from Aon, even though global commercial insurance rates have experienced some downward adjustments in recent quarters.
This move by Blackstone is part of a broader, accelerating trend of institutional private capital flowing into the specialized insurance markets housed within Lloyd’s of London, which remains the world’s biggest hub for commercial and specialty risk. The entry of alternative asset management giants into the centuries-old insurance marketplace has gathered considerable momentum over recent years. Last year, for instance, Allianz SE and Oaktree Capital Management similarly teamed up to set up a dedicated reinsurance syndicate at Lloyd’s, proving that the convergence of alternative capital and traditional underwriting is becoming an increasingly favored model for handling massive global risks.

For Blackstone, Cortina represents just one piece of a much larger, multi-pronged strategy within the Lloyd’s ecosystem. The New York-based alternative asset manager already backs another Lloyd’s reinsurance syndicate that actively takes on a portion of the risks originating from American International Group Inc. Furthermore, in late 2025, Blackstone announced its financial backing for another new Lloyd’s syndicate slated to be managed by Bermuda-based insurance underwriter The Fidelis Partnership, steadily building a comprehensive portfolio of insurance-linked investments.
Industry leaders view this infusion of alternative capital as a necessary evolution to cope with modern global challenges. As risks grow steadily in scale and complexity, clients across the corporate and insurance spectrum are increasingly looking for effective risk transfer solutions that take into account all forms of available capital, according to Aon Chief Executive Officer Greg Case.
Subject to the final receipt of formal approval from Lloyd’s, Cortina officially plans to begin its underwriting operations starting January 1.
