Reba McEntire Recalls Dolly Parton’s Heartwarming On-Set Surprise and the Meaning of Home

Reba McEntire was determined to make Dolly Parton feel entirely welcome when the fellow country music legend agreed to make a special guest appearance on her hit television sitcom, "Reba." However, as McEntire would soon discover, it was Parton who ultimately went out of her way to make every single person behind the scenes feel exceptionally valued and seen.

Speaking candidly at the NAR NXT event in New Orleans alongside her manager and former real estate agent, Justin McIntosh, McEntire reflected on the remarkably thoughtful gesture Parton extended to the entire crew of her sitcom. What could have been a routine guest-star appearance turned into a masterclass in genuine hospitality, leaving a lasting impression that McEntire still cherishes to this day.

Instead of simply arriving on set to run through her lines and exit, Parton made a dedicated point of personally greeting every crew member working behind the scenes. She walked the floor bringing Valentine’s Day candy and a personal message of appreciation to every individual working on the production. For McEntire, the memory remains a vivid, shining example of the authentic warmth and kindness that has made her fellow icon so universally beloved by fans and peers alike.

"I was so nervous with Dolly being on the set. I wanted everyone to be nice. What I didn’t expect was how nice she was going to be on the set," McEntire shared with the audience.

McEntire recalled that Parton deliberately took the time to make each crew member feel appreciated, transforming a standard television set into a community space. "She had Valentine’s Day candies, and she went to every crew member individually and said how happy she was to be there," McEntire noted. "She didn’t have to do that."

That unforgettable encounter remains etched in McEntire’s memory, alongside a quiet conversation the two legends shared while sitting together on the iconic couch of the show’s set. Curious about the longevity of her peer’s legendary career, McEntire posed a straightforward question to the queen of country music.

"I asked her if she would ever retire," McEntire recalled. "And she said, ‘What would I do that I could have so much fun doing?’"

It was a simple, grounded answer, but one that perfectly reflected the tireless enthusiasm and passion that McEntire remembers so fondly. It also mirrored McEntire’s own perspective on her decades-long career in entertainment, anchored by a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunities she has been given to connect with audiences across generations.

"I’ve never met a person or known a person that’s so universally loved like Dolly Parton," McEntire said. "I’ve never heard anything bad about her. That’s how special of a person she was."

That shared sense of appreciation for a life spent performing and connecting with people is something McEntire deeply identifies with. For the country superstar, keeping her work exciting and meaningful means giving herself the creative freedom to try new things, all while inviting her loyal fanbase along for the journey.

"When I change things up, my fans stay interested with me," she explained. "If it looks like I’m having fun, then they’re having fun."

The actress and singer revealed that being able to genuinely enjoy her work every day is a profound gift. "If you are doing what you love, then that’s how blessed you are," she said. "That’s one of the greatest gifts God can give, to give you a job you love. I’m very grateful for my job."

The deep connection McEntire has successfully built and maintained with her audience over the decades also rests on the core belief that people can instantly recognize sincerity—a principle she believes applies just as strongly to daily life as it does to the entertainment industry. "I try to sing the songs from my heart so when you listen to it, it touches your heart," she said.

That unwavering emphasis on warmth, authenticity, and personal connection carries directly into the way McEntire approaches finding and evaluating a home. Long before her illustrious career on stage and television brought her to massive audiences worldwide, McEntire’s understanding of a home was forged on an expansive 8,000-acre ranch in rural Oklahoma.

Despite the vast expanse of open land surrounding them, her family of six shared a surprisingly modest house featuring just three bedrooms and one bathroom. When asked what first comes to mind when she reminisces about her childhood ranch, McEntire immediately points to the people and the intangible feelings that filled the space.

"Love, family, unity, closeness," she said. "One itty-bitty bathroom, three bedrooms. We were a close family."

Gathering together around the dinner table was a fundamental part of daily life, and the sensory atmosphere of that house remains remarkably easy for her to recall decades later. "We all sat at the dinner table together," she said. "It was earthy. I can still smell how the house smelled and the energy."

The historic land remains a cherished family property to this day. McEntire notes that the ranch stayed within the family following the passing of her parents, and her sister and her sister’s family now live on the property, maintaining its deep-rooted legacy.

Those formative early memories continue to offer a clear glimpse of what McEntire still values most when she walks through the front door of a house: an immediate feeling of comfort and a powerful connection that goes far beyond surface-level appearance or square footage.

"A house has energy, and when you come in and when you bond with that energy, it makes it a home," she said. "So I always look for good, positive energy when I come in."

The country icon recently reflected on the exact moment she experienced that magnetic pull while searching for property in Tennessee. A close friend, who happened to be vacationing in Florida alongside a real estate agent, spotted a promising listing the agent was actively reviewing and immediately urged that the property be shown to McEntire.

"My friend said, ‘You gotta show Reba that place,’" she recalled.

The scenic approach to the property and a peaceful creek running along the back boundary quickly captured her attention. Soon, she found herself returning for multiple visits and spending quality time getting to know the current owners.

"The love I had for that house, it took my breath away," she said. "I went a couple times, and I watched football games with the owners."

When it comes to her ultimate priorities in a living space, personal comfort and stunning surroundings rank remarkably high. "I love a home with a view," she said. "When I lived in Oklahoma, you could see sunrise and sunset. That’s important to me."

McEntire added that this shared focus on people, empathy, and understanding individual needs is what ultimately drew her to her ongoing partnership with Realtor.com.

"What y’all do is very important, you care so much, that’s why I like Realtor.com. I love your organization because you have heart… You really do dive into the family and what their needs are. You love people and you care about people, that’s why I wanted to be with you guys," she stated.

Whether she is discussing the nuances of finding a dream home or maintaining the lifelong trust of an audience, McEntire continually returns to the fundamental importance of treating people with kindness and respect—and maintaining that standard consistently over time.

"You have to stay consistently honest, because when you look someone in the eye, they know how you treated them last time," she said. "You have to stay consistent with it."
