Google Just Subtly Updated Its Iconic “G” Logo

Google has made a surprising announcement about changing its iconic multicolor “G” logo after almost a decade. Although the change is small, it means a lot.

The red, yellow, green and blue stripes used to be flat on surfaces, but now they are smooth and blended into a gradient. We first noticed the newest redesign on the MacOS/iOS Google Search app. It was truly a sight to see. Even though the redesign is not all too drastic, and quite refreshing—there is a modern and elegant feel.

Why This Matters for Branding

As someone learning the ins and outs of branding and design, this small update was a powerful reminder:
Even the tiniest visual changes can signal a major shift in direction.

Google didn’t announce the update with fanfare. No blog post. No tweet. Just a quiet rollout—because sometimes, the best brand moves are the ones that feel effortless.

Design doesn’t always have to scream. Sometimes, a whisper is enough to let the world know you’re evolving.
