Elon Musk Steps Down from Trump Administration

Elon Musk has left his role as a top adviser to President Donald Trump. The billionaire announced his departure on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

End of Government Role

Musk thanked President Trump for the chance to cut wasteful government spending. He led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aimed to reduce federal bureaucracy. His time as a Special Government Employee has now ended.

“The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government,” Musk wrote on social media.

Disagreement Over Trump’s Bill

Musk’s departure came just one day after he criticized Trump’s main legislative plan. He called the President’s “big beautiful bill” disappointing during a CBS interview.

The bill includes tax cuts and stronger immigration enforcement. However, Musk described it as a “massive spending bill” that increases the federal deficit and hurts his efficiency work.

Musk plans to focus on Tesla and SpaceX again. He also said he will reduce his political spending, stating “I think I’ve done enough.”
