Sony Cuts PlayStation 5 Prices While Xbox and Nintendo Raise Console Costs

Gaming console prices are moving in opposite directions this year. While Microsoft and Nintendo are making their consoles more expensive, Sony is doing the opposite by cutting PlayStation 5 prices significantly.

Sony’s Big Price Cuts

Sony just announced their “Days of Play 2025” sale starting May 28, offering some of the biggest discounts we’ve seen on PlayStation consoles. Here are the main deals:

  • PlayStation 5 with Call of Duty bundle: Now $399.99 (down from $519.98 – a $120 discount)
  • PlayStation 5 Pro: $50 off regular price
  • PS VR2 headset and bundle: $30 off
  • DualSense Edge controllers: $30 off

The PS5 bundle deal is particularly attractive since it includes one of the most popular games and costs less than buying the console alone normally would.

Xbox and Nintendo Go the Other Way

While Sony is cutting prices, their competitors are doing the exact opposite:

Microsoft Xbox Price Increases:

  • Xbox Series X jumped from $499.99 to $599.99 on May 1st
  • This is a $100 increase for their main console that competes with PS5
  • Game prices are also going up

Nintendo Switch 2 Launch:

  • New Nintendo Switch 2 launches June 5th at $449.99
  • That’s $150 more than the original Switch cost
  • Games will cost $79.99 instead of the current $59.99

What This Means for Gamers

Sony’s strategy seems focused on attracting more customers by making their console more affordable, especially with the popular Call of Duty bundle. This could be smart timing since both Xbox and Nintendo are asking customers to pay more money.

For gamers looking to buy a new console, Sony’s deals make the PS5 much more attractive right now. The timing isn’t coincidental – Sony likely wants to win over customers who might be put off by Xbox’s price increases or Nintendo’s expensive new console.

This price war shows how competitive the gaming console market is. While Xbox and Nintendo are betting people will pay higher prices for their products, Sony is betting that lower prices will bring in more customers.
